About The Illustrious
Dr. Russell S. Gideon, 33°
Prince Hall Consistory No. 67
Valley of Seattle
Orient of Washington
14th
Illustrious Gideon was our first foreign born leader—hailing from Nova Scotia, Canada. He continued the fight against bogus freemasonry taken up so ably by other Sovereign Grand Commanders. He was at helm when our jurisdiction celebrated its 100th anniversary. He participated in a joint cornerstone laying ceremony with the mainstream Grand Lodges of Oregon and Washington. He also established the Scottish Rite Hall of Fame. He drafted a Statement of Principles which sought to eliminate sovereignty issues between this United Supreme Council and the Prince Hall Grand Lodges in the jurisdiction. One of his greatest accomplishments is overseeing the establishment of the Scottish Rite House across the street from the Cathedral. He was accorded Sovereign Grand Commander Emeritus status. The Class of 1986 is named in his honor.
